Zackery's Biography
Zackery Burgess is an internationally experienced communications leader, who has more than 10-plus years’ experience designing, developing and implementing strategic marketing, sales, communication, crisis management, and public relations projects within traditional and non-traditional media. He is well-versed in research, writing, and editing. And he has developed, executed and monitored successful communications campaigns and programs. Most importantly, he is an effective communicator.
Zack is highly effective at crafting messaging, and his extensive background as a journalist, communications professional, and consultant with national and local non-profit organizations in Director-level roles gives him the foundation to form strategic communication strategies, develop impactful messaging, and storytelling. He is the former Senior Policy Advisor and Director of Communications for a Philadelphia City Councilman and has worked on mayoral campaigns.
His journey started as a teenager at the Detroit Free Press. The smell of ink and the adrenaline of the newsroom catapulted him to a breathtaking career as a journalist. That passion took him from being a Senior Writer for Slam Magazine to covering Major League Baseball and the NBA for The Kansas City Star to a feature writer and Sports Columnist at The Washington Times. His work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Crain’s Detroit Business, Politics Magazine, EDGE Magazine, USA Today, Newsday, The Washington Post and on web sites ranging from MSNBC to NBC Sports to Black America Web, where he was a national columnist.
He also authored and managed a groundbreaking 32-book sports series aimed at 4th and 5th graders, that was distributed across the country (Norwood House Press). The series looks at the past, present and future of each NFL team.
A Howard University graduate (BA) in Journalism, he has covered politics, culture, and current events…and every major sporting event except for the Super Bowl and the Olympics. He received his Master’s Degree (MA) in Public Relations and Organizational Communications from Wayne State University and a Certificate in Writing for Social Media from UC-Berkeley.
